Ricciardo: Mercedes still setting the standard with DAS innovation

Daniel Ricciardo has praised Mercedes' ingenuity in reference to their recently created Dual Axis Steering (DAS) system and how they have kept other teams working hard with their innovation.

The new system stole the headlines throughout the first days of pre-season testing for the upcoming 2020 F1 season, with mixed reactions from other drivers and teams.

Ricciardo thinks Mercedes should be applauded for their desire to continue to improve despite being on a run of six championships titles in a row.

“Hats off to them because they have been dominant this whole turbo era, yet they are still the ones pushing everyone else," the Australian said to F1 TV.

“It should be us and everyone else pushing them and they’re not getting complacent and I think that’s why they’ve been so dominant.

“They’re setting an example right now and as a competitor, I certainly respect that. It’s good for everyone to see how far they’re willing to go.”

Ricciardo admitted that he and many others were unaware of this system and believes that everyone will be discussing DAS to see if they can possibly implement it.

He added: “I think everyone up until now – I’ve never heard of a system like that talked about, so I don’t think maybe anyone had really thought about it.

“I don’t want to say anyone, but probably not many people talked about that. I don’t know if it was ever a conversation had, but I’m sure the conversation’s happening in every team right now.”
