Red Bull back team collaborations

Red Bull boss Christian Horner sees no problem with teams collaborating with each other, as he believes it provides a more competitive Formula 1 grid.

Currently in F1, Red Bull have a sister team in AlphaTauri, Ferrari have a relationship with Alfa Romeo, while Racing Point recently revealed their 2020 car which drew criticism for copying elements from Mercedes’ 2019 challenger.

Even though there is an element of conflict of interest with this particular practice, Horner says it is good for the sport.

“I think collaborations do make sense because otherwise teams like AlphaTauri and Racing Point, Haas and even Sauber [Alfa Romeo], if they couldn’t buy suspension and gearboxes, that’s all R&D that they’re going to have to conduct themselves with big amounts of resource,” he said.

“Of course, some teams look like they’ve gone further in their cloning than others, but so long as it complies with the rules I don’t particularly have a problem with it.”

The Red Bull team principal thinks that providing smaller teams with resources which they normally would not have access to allows them to become more competitive.

“For Liberty, it creates more competitive grid, for the teams it makes Formula 1 more affordable,” he explained.

“Of course, you don’t want 10 cars that all look the same, but I think there’s elements of the car that is transferable like suspension and gearboxes, for example, that make a lot of sense.”

Toro Rosso previously acted as a ‘B Team’ of sorts to Red Bull, but it is thought that after the rebrand to AlphaTauri that the partnership will become less one-sided in favour of Red Bull.
