Magnussen: I still want to be F1 world champion

Haas driver Kevin Magnussen says he only continues to race in Formula One because he still harbours dreams of becoming world champion.

Ask any driver in Formula One, and they will tell you that they believe they can win the world championship title if they are given the correct machinery. Magnussen is no different to any of the others, especially having begun his Formula One career with a podium for McLaren in the 2014 Australian Grand Prix.

“I am in Formula 1 because my dream is to be World Champion, it’s not to get into the top 10,” Magnussen told Danish newspaper BT. “I can’t imagine spending all my good years in racing battling for seventh."

Knowing that the likelihood of a title assault would require a move away from Haas, Magnussen conceded that gaining a move would require him to perform strongly for a prolonged period.

"It's a tough process," he added. "But if I can overperform over a long period of time, hopefully will I get taken to one of the big teams. I have to be consistent until I can open that door.

"There will come a time when I will no longer believe that I can become world champion, but I'm not there yet.

"I also dream of winning Le Mans and Daytona - but the Formula 1 dream still shines that little bit brighter."
