Hamilton responds to contract rumours

Lewis Hamilton has responded to recent reports that contract talks between himself and Mercedes have hit a snag due to his wage demands, saying the stories are made up.

The six-time world champion’s current deal runs out at the conclusion of the 2020 season, meaning he is free to have talks over an extended contract with Mercedes, or even with another team about a possible switch, with rumours circling that Ferrari could come calling.

This week, Corriere dello Sport reported that Mercedes balked at Hamilton’s wage demands which were in excess of €55m per season for the next four campaigns.

However, the driver himself has addressed the reports via his Instagram page, saying:

“FYI Toto [Wolff] and I have not even spoken about [the] contract yet, Nothing is being negotiated currently, papers making up stories.”

With Charles Leclerc and Max Verstappen both signing new deals with Ferrari and Red Bull respectively over the past couple of months, Hamilton’s options have suddenly limited with regards to where he will drive from 2020 onwards.

The Brit has enjoyed the biggest successes of his career with Mercedes, winning five of his six championships in 2014, 2015, 2017, 2018, and most recently in 2019.
