Formula One 70th Anniversary plans unraveling

Plans for London to host Formula One's 70th anniversary celebration have hit a roadblock.

Planned for the weekend of May 16th-17th, the event would sit between back-to-back Grand Prix in Zandvoort and Barcelona and just four days ahead of first practice in Monaco.

The weekend was chosen as it is the closest to the anniversary of that first race at Silverstone on May 13th, 1950.

Liberty Media are hoping to convince all ten teams and all 20 drivers to attend but according to RaceFans.net, teams raised their concerns over the plans for the festival at a meeting of the Promoters’ Working Group earlier this week.

The 2020 season is already one for the record books with 22-Grand Prix on calendar. With the already heavy work load, attending an event in a different country to one where the next race is being held, especially in the congested European leg of the year, is a big ask.

Across the 2020 season, there are already three fan festivals planned. Kyalami (South Africa) will host the first festival on the week following the Bahrain Grand Prix and the final event will be in New York. No date has been set of yet for the New York event.
