VIDEO: Schumacher wins first title after Hill collision

Michael Schumacher was crowned Formula 1 world drivers' champion for the first time on this day 25 years ago.

The first of a record seven titles, Schumacher beat Damon Hill to the title after a season-ending Australian GP dripping with controversy.

Schumacher had been disqualified from two races that season, and served a race ban for ignoring the first of those disqualifications - a black flag issued at the British GP.

That had allowed Hill and Williams to close a huge gap that Schumacher had opened up amid a dominant start to the season.

Hill, who had assumed team leader status at Williams after the death of Ayrton Senna at Imola, went to Adelaide one point behind Schumacher in the championship and looked much faster in the race, until he approached Schumacher for a risky overtake... and the rest is history.
