Hamilton could join Ferrari - Wolff

Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff has admitted that it is “possible” Lewis Hamilton could join Ferrari in the future.

The Brit secured his sixth world championship at the United States Grand Prix on Sunday, taking him one ahead of Juan Manuel Fangio and just one behind the record-holder, Michael Schumacher.

Questions have naturally been put to him and Wolff about his future plans, and his boss reckons a move to Ferrari could happen if it is a “dream” of Hamilton’s.

“It’s natural that drivers always dream of Ferrari, the most important brand in Formula 1,” the Silver Arrows boss told Sky Italia.

“Red is like the sun in Formula 1.”

When pressed as to whether it is a necessity for Hamilton to pursue this dream Wolff said:

“He does not need it – he needs to win.

“He needs to be with a team and with people who love to work. And his emotion and heart are definitely with Mercedes today.”

The Austrian insists that Hamilton is Mercedes’ priority for the moment, but if the driver starts looking at other teams, then the team will have to start looking at other drivers.

“We hope to have the two most competitive drivers in Formula 1,” he continued.

“And he (Hamilton) is our priority today.

“But if he wants to have a look at the market, we have to as well. And there are others that I like.”
