Williams provide update on 2020 driver line-up

Williams deputy team principal Claire Williams has revealed that there is a “handful” of candidates being considered for their second driving spot for 2020.

Ahead of the 2019 season, the team brought in an entirely new line-up which included the returning Robert Kubica partnering F2 champion George Russell, who has already been confirmed as staying with the team for the start of the next campaign.

With one seat remaining, Kubica is believed to be up against reserve driver Nicholas Latifi for the spot.

According to Williams, though, no decision has been made.

“We are looking at the 2020 seat and there is a handful of candidates,” she told Motorsport.com

“Robert has done a good job as well this year, it hasn’t been easy for him. The car isn’t what he would like it to be or what anyone would like it to be so it hasn’t been a good platform for him to indicate how strong he can be.

“It’s something that’s under consideration at the moment but I’m in no rush to make any decision. We’ve got to make the right decision going into next year.”

Kubica made his miraculous return to F1 in the 2019 season after eight years away following a career-threatening rally car accident which cost him part of his arm.

However, he has struggled since his comeback and has regularly been outperformed by rookie team-mate Russell, even if he has a solitary point more than the Brit which was gained in the chaotic German GP.
