Huge Hamilton crash halts FP3 in Belgium

Lewis Hamilton brought FP3 at the Belgian Grand Prix to a halt with a heavy crash into the barriers at Les Fagnes.

Hamilton lost control of his Mercedes after running onto the barriers at the approach to the fast right-hander and slammed into the tyre wall.

Perhaps thankfully for Hamilton, he went into the wall front-end first.

Although Mercedes will need to make rushed repairs to get his car ready for qualifying, it is unlikely that Hamilton has sustained damage to his gearbox or power unit, which could carry grid penalties. Mercedes will need to assess whether a change of chassis is required. If so, Hamilton would have to start the race from the pit lane.

Taking to team radio, Hamilton immediately reported: "I'm in the wall guys, I'm sorry."

The championship leader was able to walk away from the incident apparently unscathed, although the force of the impact saw the medical car deployed.
