Brawn: Mick Schumacher's celebrations reminded me of Michael

Mick Schumacher successfully won his first F2 race during the Hungarian Grand Prix weekend, and Formula 1 director of motorsport Ross Brawn admits the young German’s subsequent celebrations reminded him of his father, Michael Schumacher.

Schumacher hasn’t enjoyed a great maiden campaign in F2 despite being 2018 European F3 champion, but won his first race in Budapest in front of family members and Ferrari team principal Mattia Binotto.

Brawn, who previously worked with Michael, says the aftermath of the win catalysed memories of the seven-time world champion’s success.

"I wasn't at the track, but it was an emotional moment seeing him raise his arms to the sky, and I can't deny that it reminded me of his father, Michael," Brawn said in his Hungarian GP post-race debrief.

"Mick had to fight for the win and avoid making mistakes, as he was harried all race long by Nobuharu Matsushita.

"The victory comes after a rather unlucky first part of the year, and this will give him more confidence in his abilities.

"The younger Schumacher's efforts have captured the imagination of media all around the world, and show how much the Schumacher name still means, and how much attention it can generate.”

However, Brawn has once again asked that Mick be allowed to mature at his own pace, despite the pressure that comes with holding the Schumacher name.

"Mick still needs to be allowed to progress calmly in order to see where he fits in this competitive world of talented youngsters, but yesterday's win was an important moment: there's a long way to go, but he's on the right road,” the Liberty Media boss added.

Schumacher is now a member of the Ferrari junior driver academy, and has been tipped for a F1 seat with the Scuderia in the future.
