Wolff: Hamilton was in a different dimension in Hungary

Mercedes boss Toto Wolff was full of praise for Lewis Hamilton following his driver’s eighth win of the campaign at the Hungarian Grand Prix, saying he was in a “different dimension” to everyone else.

Max Verstappen led the race in Budapest for the majority of the afternoon with Hamilton in behind, but a strategic masterstroke from Mercedes in bringing their main in for new tyres with 20 laps to go proved to be the difference. As Verstappen’s tyres disintegrated, Hamilton steadily made up the 20-second gap to P1 before overtaking with a handful of laps remaining.

The pitstop may have been the deciding factor, but Wolff thinks the performance of Hamilton to make up the ground can’t be underestimated.

"Lewis' driving today was of a different dimension," said the Silver Arrows team principal.

"In order to dominate an era a team needs to work together on a journey towards creating something special.

"It doesn't happen without every member of the team delivering, but it certainly doesn't happen without the right guy driving.”

Wolff admits to having initial doubts due to the amount of time that needed to be made up to Verstappen, but once Hamilton got within range of P1 he knew it was a matter of time.

"At first it did not seem possible, but as soon as Lewis sniffed the position there was no holding back. It was an unbelievable drive,” he added.
