Schumacher secures first F2 win in Hungary

Mick Schumacher secured a huge 2019 breakthrough by taking a dominant first Formula 2 victory in Sunday's sprint race at the Hungaroring.

Schumacher led from reverse-grid pole, his second P1 start of the year.

However, unlike in his debut event in Bahrain, where he fell to sixth place, the German delivered a flawless drive to lead every lap.

The Ferrari junior driver maintained a lead around a second ahead of Nobuharu Matsushita throughout the contest.

Matsushita came under attack for second place from Sergio Sette Camara 11 laps from the end, pushing the Japanese driver to up his pace, which put him right on Schumacher's tail after Sette Camara fell away again.

But Schumacher weathered the storm to secure his first race win since stepping up to F2 on the back of 2018's title success in European F3.

Further down the order, Nyck de Vries finished ahead of title rival Nicholas Latifi, stemming some of the momentum that the Canadian had built by winning Saturday's feature race in Budapest and putting his championship lead at 30 points.
