Verstappen beat Bottas to Hungary pole at the last corner - Red Bull

Max Verstappen only took pole position at the Hungarian Grand Prix by nailing the final corner of the Hungaroring, said a jubilant Red Bull team principal Christian Horner.

Verstappen secured his maiden pole position at the 93rd attempt, becoming the 100th different F1 pole-sitter in the process.

Having won two of the last three races, Verstappen's form has started to turn attention to a potential late charge for the drivers' championship, with Lewis Hamilton 63 points ahead.

Valtteri Bottas will start between Verstappen and Hamilton in Hungary, having pushed Verstappen all the way in the fight for P1 on the grid.

"The margins are so tight around here but Max was on fire this afternoon and he aced pretty much every section of the qualifying," Horner told Sky Sports.

"That last lap was stunning. He needed to nail the last corner, because I think Valtteri was probably slightly ahead at Turn 13, but he nailed it and pole position, fantastic for him to get his first pole."

The Saturday success secures Honda's first pole position since Jenson Button's at the 2006 Australian Grand Prix for the works team.

"All credit to Honda, we couldn't do this without them," Horner added.

"To get the pole here is incredible, great for them and a great team effort. I think all the guys and girls in Milton Keynes, all the engine guys in Sakura and Milton Keynes are doing a fantastic job and that enables us to get on the front row here and the pole position."
