Alfa Romeo confirm appeal for German GP penalties

Alfa Romeo have announced that they have appealed the two penalties given to Antonio Giovinazzi and Kimi Raikkonen following the German Grand Prix.

In the soaking surroundings of Hockenheim, Alfa thought they had secured a double-points finish as Raikkonen finished seventh and Giovinazzi in eighth, but the pair were demoted out of the top 10 after the time penalties received post-race.

They were penalised for allegedly breaching clutch regulations, with stewards noting their irregular clutches gave them an advantage at Lights Out.

Team principal Fred Vasseur explained the incident after the race.

“The situation arose during the laps we spent behind the safety car ahead of the standing start – we suffered a dysfunction of the clutch that was beyond our control and we will further investigate the issue,” he said.

“We respect the FIA’s process and the stewards’ work, but will appeal this decision as we believe we have the grounds and evidence to have it overturned. In this regard, we will be in touch with the FIA soon.”

Via their Twitter page, Alfa Romeo confirmed their appeal, which read:

“Alfa Romeo Racing lodged an appeal against the decision No. 56 and 57 of the Stewards of the 2019 German Grand Prix.”
