Hamilton should be polarising, not boring, says Wolff

Mercedes boss Toto Wolff has urged Lewis Hamilton to continue to be polarising rather than boring, as the best sportspeople in the world often split opinion.

Hamilton is one of the most successful drivers in the history of Formula 1, having won five world championships, and has also transcended the sport due to his celebrity status.

However, his success and status have often brought criticism, with the latest volley of negative words against him questioning his ‘Britishness’.

Wolff is happy that his driver splits opinion, though, as it would be boring otherwise.

“For me many of the best sports stars in the world, they polarise," the Austrian said as, quoted by Motorsport.com.

"You will have heard similar comments about Serena Williams. Half of the people love her and want her to win everything, and the other ones cheer for the opponents.

"And I think you'd rather polarise than be down the middle and boring. That's my opinion.”

Hamilton is on course to claim his sixth championship in the 2019 season as he currently holds a 39-point lead over second-placed Valtteri Bottas.
