Schumacher's 2002 championship-winning Ferrari to be auctioned
A piece of history for one lucky bidder.
Michael Schumacher’s Ferrari F2002, in which he won the 2002 Formula 1 world championship, is to be auctioned off during the weekend of the final grand prix of the 2019 season in Abu Dhabi, with a portion of the proceeds going to his charity.
The car is one of the most successful in F1 history, as Schumacher cruised to the drivers’ championship 17 years ago, while it was also used for a part of the next season, in 2003.
It is famous for being driven by Schumacher during the 2002 Austrian Grand Prix - a controversial race which saw the German handed the victory after Ferrari initiated team orders to force Rubens Barrichello to allow his team-mate to pass into P1 for the victory.
As part of the festivities for the last race of the season in Abu Dhabi, it will be auctioned on the Saturday night before the GP, with fans also getting to see it being paraded on the start/finish line before the auction itself.
“The Michael Schumacher F2002, chassis no. 219, is truly special; it represents one of the last Rory Byrne-designed, V10 era cars and was like a guided missile in acquiring wins on route to a Championship won with sheer racing dominance,” said Oliver Camelin, a car expert from RM Sotheby’s Auction House.

“As a result, it remains as one of the most dominant Formula 1 racing cars in history and is fittingly joined by the ultimate in Ferrari supercars in the virtually as-new Ferrari F40.”
Camelin spoke latterly in regards to the 1990 Ferrari F40, which is also up for auction and is signed by Sebastian Vettel.
Part of the money gained from the sale of the F2002 will be donated to the Keep Fighting, Never Give Up Foundation - a charity set-up by Schumacher’s family following his life-threatening skiing accident suffered in 2013.
