Ferrari convinced Vettel penalty is unjust despite dropping appeal

Ferrari team principal Mattia Binotto remains insistent that Sebastian Vettel did not commit any offence in the incident which left him with a five-second penalty that ultimately cost him victory at the Canadian Grand Prix, and says reversing the decision remains a priority.

The Scuderia dropped an appeal against Vettel's five-second time penalty on Thursday, but are now looking into their 'right to review' – essentially seeking the same outcome through a different process.

Vettel ran wide at Turn 4, swerving onto the grass and then back onto the track, before finally recollecting his car. Hamilton had to jab on the brakes to avoid a collision, and complained that Vettel was guilty of re-joining unsafely.

Binotto said after the race that Ferrari were the moral winners, but says the team are still trying to have that reflected in the record books.

He told Motorsport.com: "For our part, considering the images and data we have available, we are convinced that there were no misconduct, but Sebastian made a mistake on the way out but I think he only tried to recover the car, slow down, and get back on track more safely.

"We are collecting all available data, trying to bring new elements to eventually have a different decision. We will see in what form and in what way, but surely we are working hard."

Vettel was clearly furious mid- and post-race, ranting over team radio before initially appearing to boycott the podium celebrations, before returning out of respect to Hamilton and team-mate Charles Leclerc.

Binotto said: "Knowing Sebastian, he will come out stronger than before."
