Vettel robbed by penalty as Hamilton handed Canada win

Lewis Hamilton won the Canadian Grand Prix in controversial circumstances as Sebastian Vettel lost the victory in a race he utterly dominated to a highly questionable penalty. Vettel was given a five-second penalty for re-joining the track unsafely ahead of Hamilton.

Vettel accused the stewards of "stealing the race" from Ferrari, with F1 fans certainly robbed of the spectacle of seeing the multi-time world champions going wheel-to-wheel late on in the race.

The German had swerved off the track at Turn 4 and was still going sideways when he moved back to the asphalt, careering into the path of Hamilton.

Mercedes were quick to refer the incident to race stewards, who deemed it worthy of a time penalty, despite Vettel seemingly having little option, besides allowing his car to smash into the wall.

Vettel was unable to pull away so, despite crossing the line first, it was Hamilton who took a fifth victory of 2019, continuing Mercedes' run of dominance this season to a seventh win from as many races.

Hamilton also extended his lead in the championship to 29 points as Valtteri Bottas could only manage fourth, with a fastest lap.

Charles Leclerc collected his second podium of the season in the most low-key manner imaginable, as the Vettel incident will dominate the story of what was an intriguing - and controversial - race.
