Vettel explains pole dry spell: Hamilton is 'bloody good!'

A jubliant Sebastian Vettel has provided an opinion as to why it has taken him 17 races to break his run of not gaining pole position in a Grand Prix race. According to the German, it is because Lewis Hamilton has been so “bloody good” in qualifying over the past year.

Vettel was speaking moments after he secured pole for the Canadian Grand Prix, which is his first since the 2018 German GP. With Hamilton looking poised for P1, the Ferrari man dramatically crossed the line two-tenths of a second faster than his rival.

After such a long spell without starting a race in P1, Vettel is happy to finally better Hamilton.

“He [Hamilton] is bloody good in qualifying, hard to crack,” said the four-time world champion when asked how it felt to stop the rot.

“But, I'm full of adrenaline to be honest.

“You know the feeling in the car when it just keeps coming, you feel the grip. That was one of those laps. IIt was really, really, really nice. I really enjoyed it.

“Very happy, very happy for the team, because the last few weeks, the last 17 races have been quite tough for us.”

In the practice sessions yesterday, Vettel, and most other drivers, suffered on the long run pace, and Vettel concedes that it was “awful” whilst admitting that things improved in qualifying.

“It was awful,” he said of the long run pace.

“Today the car was a lot better. We take that into tomorrow.

“Good day, the car felt good and we can take that into the race. These guys [Hamilton and Leclerc] will be very quick over the distance, but we'll try everything.”

Vettel has two wins to his name at the Canadian GP, with the previous one coming in 2018.
