Raikkonen: Monaco GP was boring

Kimi Raikkonen has lamented the lack of overtaking opportunities available to drivers at the Circuit de Monaco, and believes the Grand Prix in Monte Carlo on Sunday was “boring” particularly for Alfa Romeo and himself, as he finished down in 17th.

In his 300th race in Formula 1, Raikkonen started in 14th position on the grid and never improved. The lack of pace in his car even created a long line of traffic behind him in a middle portion of the race, whilst the most exciting part of his run was a nudge by the Racing Point of Lance Stroll.

The Finn says, for him, it was a boring Sunday.

“We didn’t expect this to be an easy weekend and unfortunately it turned out to be the case,” he admitted.

“It was quite a boring race and there was nowhere to pass: we finished where we were on lap one.

“Even though I had front wing damage, some issues before and after the stop and I was hit by [Lance] Stroll, none of these things ultimately had any impact on our finishing position.

“Once you’re behind a car, you’re stuck there unless they have a massive issue – it’s just how it is in Monaco.

Raikkonen revealed that Alfa Romeo attempted to alter their race strategy in an attempt to catch the cars in front, but the change in tactic didn’t work.

“We tried something different with the strategy as it made no sense to copy what those in front of us did, but in the end it didn’t make us move forward. The only thing that could have given us a chance was rain, but it didn’t come.” he added.

After six races in the 2019 season, Raikkonen is 10th in the driver’s championship.
