Schumacher crash sends Monaco Formula 2 race into meltdown

Friday is supposed to be a day of calm at the Monaco Grand Prix, but Formula 2's feature race brought thrills and spills to Monte Carlo's streets, with Mick Schumacher's crash at Rascasse prompting a chaotic, and controversial end to a race won by Nyck de Vries.

De Vries won from pole, with Luca Ghiotto and Nobuhara Matsushita joining him on the podium at the chequered flag, but it remains to be seen if the result will remain afterwards.

Schumacher crashed while trying to overtake Tatiana Calderon at La Rascasse, causing a blocked track and bringing out the red flags.

The German ran ninth at the time, but he was the leading car to have made the mandatory pit-stop – seemingly putting him in position to challenge for victory.

However, once racing resumed after a lengthy delay, Schumacher and the cars behind him were listed as a lap down, as the eight ahead had circulated the track before joining the traffic jam, which had not cross the start/finish line.

Schumacher had to serve a drive-through penalty, taking him out of contention, but the likes of Louis Deletraz and Anthoine Hubert seemed to lose out.

Race control confirmed: "Alleged race suspension procedure infringements will be investigated after the race."

It is unclear at this stage if that refers to the 'lapped' cars being listed incorrectly or the changing of tyres while everyone waited n the pit-lane for the race to resume.

De Vries' victory seems to be safe, however, moving him second in the drivers' championship and just five points off leader Nicholas Latifi, who had a race to forget in which he made contact with several drivers while attempting unwise overtakes, including one at the famous hairpin.
