Ricciardo to crack out overtaking moves at Spanish Grand Prix

Daniel Ricciardo has joked he’ll need to “crack out” his famous overtaking moves at this weekend’s Spanish Grand Prix if he is to make it up the places after being hit with a three-place grid penalty following an offence in the last GP in Azerbaijan.

In the latter stages of the race, the Australian attempted to burst beyond Daniil Kvyat into 10th place, only to misjudge the overtake to slide off-track. Little did Ricciardo know that Kvyat followed, with the former subsequently reversing into the Toro Rosso man without looking.

The Renault driver has apologised to his team, and Kvyat, for the accident, and admits he’ll need to start regularly overtaking in Barcelona if he is to get a good result.

"I feel bad for the team about what happened in Baku, especially as we were starting to hit a nice rhythm in the race," said Ricciardo.

"We’ll take the positives from it, move on and go again in Barcelona.

“Unfortunately, the three-place grid penalty isn’t ideal, but it’s one I’ll accept for my error and I’ll deal with it as best as I can in Spain.

"Maybe it’s time to crack out some of the overtaking moves!"

Spain presents the first European leg of the 2019 Formula 1 season, and Ricciardo is looking to returning to the Circuit de Catalunya where he has had some success in the past.

"The Spanish Grand Prix is always an exciting time of the year as it’s the first European round of the season,” he continued.

"Barcelona is a fun circuit, we all know it very well from all the winter and in-season testing.

"It’s a circuit I’ve always enjoyed racing at in my career: I won there in Formula Renault 3.5 and in recent years have been on the podium.

"We’ll be targeting a clean weekend right from the off on Friday and hopefully come away with some points in the bag."

After the opening four races of the campaign, Ricciardo is 13th in the driver’s championship.
