Senna tribute planned for Spanish GP

The Circuit de Catalunya has confirmed plans for a tribute to Ayrton Senna on the podium at next week's Spanish Grand Prix. The race will be the first Formula 1 event since the 25th anniversary of Senna's passing at Imola.

Memories of Senna were shared widely across the Formula 1 world this week as May 1st marked a quarter of a century since the ill-fated 1994 San Marino Grand Prix.

Roland Ratzenberger also died at Imola that weekend, with Rubens Barrichello and Pedro Lamy escaping without serious injury from serious accidents.

Senna had planned to pay tribute to Ratzenberger at the end of the race.

As marshals tended to the wreckage of Senna's car at the Tamburello Curve, they found an Austrian flag furled in the Brazilian's overalls, which he had presumably intended to raise at the finish line in honour of the Simtek driver, who passed away due to injuries suffered the day before in qualifying.

A flag made up of half a Brazilian and Austrian design will be waved by the race-winner in Barcelona, while the design will be available for fans to purchase.
