Mercedes set new F1 record as Bottas leads Hamilton home in Baku

Mercedes set a new all-time Formula 1 record as Valtteri Bottas won from Lewis Hamilton at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, securing the fourth one-two finish for the Silver Arrows from as many races at the start of the 2019 season.

No team has ever started a world championship campaign with four one-two finishes – Mercedes had equalled the previous record of three last time out in China.

That record had been held by Williams, who begun 1992 with Nigel Mansell leading home team-mate Riccardo Patrese in the first three races of the season.

Mansell went on to win nine of 16 races that season to secure his one and only world championship.

Things are much closer between the 2019 Mercedes vintage, with Bottas and Hamilton having taken one win apiece so far.

Bottas has the lead leaving Baku by dint of the fastest lap he set en route to victory at the Australian Grand Prix.

The Finn went through the entire 2018 campaign winless, but appears to be Hamilton's biggest title threat, with Ferrari struggling for form.

Hamilton is yet to secure a bonus point in 2019, but victories in Bahrain and China have underlined his desire for a sixth world title.
