Schumacher denied dream F1 debut by Verstappen in Bahrain

Mick Schumacher was within five minutes of producing a dream debut in F1 at Bahrain post-race testing, after posting the fastest time only for Max Verstappen to trump him in the closing stages of the afternoon session.

Schumacher recorded 33 laps in the morning run out, appearing comfortable before an ultra-rare rainstorm disrupted proceedings for four hours of the day.

As the drivers resumed in the afternoon, with Romain Grosjean the fastest man until that point, Verstappen produced the fastest time before being quickly overtaken by Schumacher, whose 1m 29.976 looked to be good enough to secure the fastest lap of the day.

But Max, never to be outdone, ignored the sentiment around the occasion to record 1m 29.379 in the final minutes to take the spoils.

It will likely do little to temper enthusiasm, and, indeed, expectation around the son of the legendary Michael, who also performed with distinction in his F2 race, having recorded pole on Saturday and finishing the race in sixth place.

Elsewhere, Lando Norris was another young driver who enjoyed a hugely successful weekend, following up his hugely creditable sixth in the race on Sunday to be third fastest today.

Grosjean ended the day in fourth, while Sunday's race winner, Lewis Hamilton, was down in sixth.
