Honda deliver update after Gasly loses power in FP2

Honda have confirmed that the power failure suffered by Pierre Gasly in FP2 will not cause Red Bull a further concern across the Australian Grand Prix weekend. Gasly limped back to the pits late in the day on Friday, but the Japanese marque confirmed it was down to a minor issue.

Gasly was fourth-quickest in FP2, just four hundredths down on team-mate Max Verstappen, who put in his late run towards the end of the session – on a grippier, yet much busier, track.

However, the Frenchman had concerns late in the session when he had to limp back to the pits after reporting a loss of power.

With much focus on Red Bull's progress this weekend with a new power unit on-board, Honda were quick to allay any fears about their prospects over the weekend.

Gasly said he extracted everything he could out of his car on Friday, ending it pleased to be within touching distance of a teammate tipped for a title challenge in 2019.

"There was a small loss of power on the last lap, so we decided to pit to look into it," said Gasly.

"It was a positive day. I did what was possible with the car, but there is still work to be done.

"I think we saw Mercedes is fast, as we expected, and at the moment we try to focus on the package and how to make the best out of it."
