Alonso admits he could return to F1

Fernando Alonso has refused to rule out a return to Formula 1 for the 2020 season, but claims that for the moment he needs to focus on other commitments as well as "recharging" his batteries following a period of a lack of success in the sport.

The Spaniard is a two-time F1 world champion but the last of the title wins came over a decade ago, while certain career moves and decisions have hampered his ability to compete for subsequent championships.

In his latest campaign, in 2018, his time with McLaren has been littered by engine and performance issues, which eventually led to the announcement of his departure.

However, that doesn't mean he won't be back.

"There's going to be a couple more challenges than the Indy 500," Alonso told Xinhua.

"I feel I need to recharge my batteries a bit next year, but in 2020, of course it can be a possibility to have a full season in IndyCar, a full season back in F1, or a full season in another series."

On Saturday night, Alonso competed in the six hours of Shanghai in the World Endurance Championship, where he claimed a podium position alongside Jenson Button.

It was on the same track he won two Chinese Grand Prix races in F1, and it is clearly a favourite of Alonso's.

"I like it," he said of the SAIC International Circuit.

"I think it's one of the best circuits on the calendar. It's challenging, with very long and unique corners, and I always enjoy driving here. The fans are also very passionate here, they always follow you all the way from the airport to the circuit and the hotel, so it's a fun place."
