Why Red Bull expect Monaco form to roll into Montreal

Red Bull are confident that Daniel Ricciardo can follow on from his Monaco Grand Prix win by challenging for victory at the Canada Grand Prix too. The Circuit de Gilles Villeneuve features long straights, typically a weakness for the Red Bull cars, but Dr Helmut Marko believes they will be strong regardless.

Formula 1's slowest lap of the season around the streets of Monte Carlo helped Red Bull dominate last weekend, with Ricciardo topping every practice and qualifying timesheet before taking the race win.

Max Verstappen also had the pace, but a crash in FP3 left him to carve his way to ninth from the back of the grid.

A further boost for Ricciardo comes with the news that his MGU-K which failed in Monaco is not damaged and can be used again, dismissing fears of a grid penalty in Canada.

A planned upgrade from Renault is expected to give Red Bull some extra grunt in Montreal next weekend, but Marko believes the track possesses characteristics in which they can also gain an advantage over Ferrari and Mercedes.

"With our good traction we can defuse the straights," Marko told Auto Motor und Sport.

"Unlike, our car is good in traffic. Even if we are not ahead at the start, we can ride well in the slipstream of the others.

"And then there are tactical possibilities, because we are better at managing the tyres than the others.

"We now have a great car. The upgrade from Barcelona is the base. Without the technical problems in Bahrain and the collision in Baku, we would be right up there."

Ricciardo climbed to third in the drivers' standings with his second win of the season, 38 points off championship leader Lewis Hamilton, while Red Bull are 71 points adrift of Mercedes in the team race.
