Ricciardo Monaco win 'like Schumacher' - Horner

Daniel Ricciardo's performance to win the Monaco Grand Prix was reminiscent of one of Michael Schumacher's greatest drives according to Red Bull team boss Christian Horner. Ricciardo managed a loss of power for over 50 laps to hold off Sebastian Vettel and take a redemptive win in Monte Carlo.

Ricciardo had victory taken away from him by a botched pitstop in 2016 and "redemption" was a word on Ricciardo's lips as he passed the chequered flag.

Horner compared the win to Schumacher's second-place finish at the 1994 Spanish Grand Prix, a remarkable drive considering his Benetton was stuck in fifth gear for much of the race.

"Un-****ing-believable. You have done an amazing job today," Horner told Ricciardo over team radio.

"That is right up there with what Schumacher did in 1995 and this is payback for 2016."

Horner later elaborated to Channel 4: "Daniel Ricciardo today... so much pressure on him today, we lost the MGU-K, that's two and a half seconds per lap.

"He stayed so calm, so cool - cooler than all the rest of us, because your brake temps go out of control, you start using more fuel.

"You've got so many issues going on. He managed all of that like he was on a Sunday afternoon drive and he was just not going to give up this victory today.

"He deserves to be a Monaco Grand Prix winner, I think this victory will be a bit more special for him."

Talk soon turned to Ricciardo's contract - the Australian's second grand prix win of the year may well strengthen his hand as Red Bull try to tie him down beyond the end of the year.

"I'm not sure whether his price has gone up or down, he's just driven an unbelievable race," Horner added.

"He's now equal on wins with Sebastian and Lewis and the way he drove today I can't put into words.

"What he's delivered here, under huge pressure, managing the tyres the way he did, managing all the issues, we could have given him more to do with saving brakes saving fuel and the engine and he's still asking what's going on with Max, what's going on with Hulkenberg.

"It was a guy totally in control all weekend."
