Red Bull: Verstappen has to change

Red Bull chief Dr Helmut Marko says Max Verstappen must learn to curb his impatience after a practice crash wrecked his hopes at the Monaco Grand Prix. Verstappen was unable to take part in qualifying after sustaining front and back-end damage in a crash out of the swimming pool complex.

After skirting around the Renault of Carlos Sainz Jr, Verstappen turned in too quickly at the second chicane and broke his right-hand steering rod before hopping over the kerb and into the barrier on the run to La Rascasse.

Verstappen could only look on as his mechanics were unable to put the car back together before qualifying, leaving him to start from the back of the grid.

Compounding his misery further, Verstappen requires a new MGU-K, which is almost certain to come back and cause him a grid penalty at a future race.

Verstappen has made errors, major or small, at every race so far this season, missing out on a potential win in China and big points elsewhere as a result.

Although he is contracted to Red Bull until 2020, the mistakes have cast his future into doubt, and Marko says Verstappen must improve.

"He has to learn not always to drive flat out," Marko told BBC Sport.

"They are all different incidents but this one for sure is a very unnecessary one.

"I think he is not patient enough. He wants always to he is the fastest but the result is only when you cross the line. He needs to be more patient, judge the situations better.

"Issue is maybe not the right word. It is always a different situation but they are all because he is impatient."

Verstappen accepted full blame for the incident, but refuted his litany of errors in 2018, saying he only held his hands up to this crash and his collision with Sebastian Vettel in Shanghai.
