Verstappen to start Monaco GP in last

Max Verstappen will start the Monaco Grand Prix from last place after demolishing his Red Bull during Saturday's practice session in Monte Carlo. Verstappen's hopes of a first win of 2018 may well have gone up in smoke with his crash out of the swimming pool chicane.

Verstappen was perhaps put off by the slow-moving Renault of Carlos Sainz Jr, but took too much kerb and broke a right-front steering rod on the barriers before skirting into the wall on the run down to La Rascasse.

It comes as a huge shame for Red Bull, with Verstappen and team-mate Daniel Ricciardo quickest of any drivers across each practice session in Monaco.

Verstappen appeared to take a telling-off from Dr Helmut Marko as he returned to the Red Bull garage.

The incident puts Verstappen back under pressure after an error-prone start to 2018, which came to a head as he and Ricciardo took each other out in Baku.

The Dutchman returned to the podium last time out in Barcelona, however he will start last in Monte Carlo after failing to get out in Q1. He also picks up an immaterial five-place gearbox penalty.
