Halo to change the look of F1 cars... again

Formula 1 cars are set to get another makeover, potentially as early as this weekend's Azerbaijan Grand Prix, with the halo safety device providing teams with a new look once again. We could see cars with their mirrors mounted from the halo in Baku, after the FIA allowed teams to make changes.

Attaching mirrors to a halo device will allow drivers a better chance of seeing over the larger rear wings on modern-spec F1 cars.

Ferrari have altered their mirrors to boost aerodynamic performance in 2018, and it remains to be seen if further changes in this area can be exploited for on-track gain.

Any potential boosts will be off-set by the FIA's safety demands, however, which includes the assertion that mirrors must not be attached to the halo and the bodywork.

FIA single seater technical boss Nikolas Tombazis wrote to teams: "We expect that you will be able to satisfy us that the installation is sufficiently rigid to ensure that the mirror does not vibrate too much, which would limit driver visibility.

"We will not accept a dual mirror mounting (Halo + traditional survival cell), as this could cause delays in the event a rescue team had to remove the Halo following an accident."
