George Russell believes the condition of Lewis Hamilton’s skin means he will race in Formula 1 for many years to come.

Speculation around Hamilton’s future in the sport have been rife of late, but the Brit is reported close to agreeing a new multi-year contract with Mercedes.

Speaking to the media ahead of the Canadian Grand Prix weekend, Russell was full of praise for his experienced team-mate and expects him to be around for some time yet.

”You've only got to look at his skin. He looks like a 25-year-old!” said Russell.

“I think I've got a few more wrinkles than he has. So I think there's many years left in Lewis.”

Why stop?

Hamilton entered the world of Formula 1 back in 2007, winning the sixth race of his career which ironically was the Canadian Grand Prix.

Only he and Fernando Alonso – who retired in 2018 before returning in 2021 – remain from the starting grid that day, but Russell said there is no reason for Hamilton to call it quits.

“I guess he's at a stage now in his career of as long as he keeps on enjoying racing, and he sees a chance to win. You know, why wouldn't you continue?”

The chemistry at Mercedes

While Mercedes have fallen a long way from the lofty heights of winning eight-consecutive world titles, the desire to fight their way back to the top is unwavering, says Russell, and team spirit is a major factor in Hamilton staying with the Black Arrows.

”We both believe in this team. He's still performing at a really strong level and we're pushing one another and it's an exciting time for the sport so, he'll be here for years to come.”
