Stroll RUINS Alonso's qualifying with dramatic Sprint shootout crash

Lance Stroll caused an early end to the second sprint qualifying session after a big crash at the Belgian GP.

The Canadian gambled on slick tyres to try and make it into the top 10 shootout but slid wide at the Jacky Ickx corner and hit the tyre barriers.

As a result, the red flag was thrown and the session ended which scuppered Fernando Alonso's hopes of reaching SQ3.

Williams also gambled on slick tyres with Alex Albon and Logan Sargeant but didn't get their laps in before the red flag.

Huge own goal

Aston Martin had gambled in not setting any times prior to going out on slicks as had Williams which is why the four drivers were desperately trying to get that one lap in.

Stroll's crash on medium tyres, which were mandated because the FIA forgot to send an official notification of a wet track, has left Aston Martin almost no chance of points in the sprint later today.

Along with those four drivers, Daniel Ricciardo was inches away from making SQ3 in the AlphaTauri but he will still be pleased to be 11th on the grid for the sprint.
