Biography of Lando Norris

British F1 driver Lando Norris is one of the brightest stars on the grid in 2023.

The McLaren ace has a long-term deal in his back pocket and seemingly a massive future in the sport.

Born on November 13, 1999, in Bristol, Lando is still just 24 years of age and appears to be a future world champion in the making.

Norris, who stands 5ft 7ins tall (1.70m), now lives in the princely surroundings of Monaco like many other F1 drivers.

Lando Norris entered Formula 1 at the age of 17 as a McLaren junior driver, completing a mid-season test with the team in Hungary in 2017 and impressing by setting the second-fastest lap.

For 2018, Norris became the official test and reserve driver for the team, learning from full-time drivers Fernando Alonso and Stoffel Vandoorne. He got his first taste of a grand prix weekend when participating in Belgian Grand Prix practice one, where Vandoorne could not match his pace.

With Alonso leaving the sport at the end of the season, Norris was announced as a full-time F1 driver after finishing second in the Formula 2 championship. Norris was partnered by Carlos Sainz with the duo forging the infamous 'Carlando bromance'.

Norris impressed on his first qualifying outing, reaching Q3 in Australia to start his debut race from eighth. The McLaren dropped to 12th on Sunday, but the signs were promising. At Bahrain, Norris' netted his first points finish with sixth, with 10 further top 10s to follow - including three in a row to close out the season.

The British driver finished the season 11th in the standings, with his true performance overshadowed by a spate of retirements caused by unreliability and accidents. The most notable was when he was running in fifth before a power unit failure on the final lap dropped him out of the points.

While his point situation was far weaker than teammate Sainz, Norris outqualified the Spaniard 11-10 across his rookie year.

2020 proved to be a challenging follow-up season for Norris, as his momentum was hampered by the postponement of the first portion of the season due to COVID-19.

At the rearranged season opener in Austria, Norris was sublime, fighting his way through the top 10 in the latter stages of the race to claim fourth. However, Lewis Hamilton was handed a five-second penalty for causing a collision with Alex Albon, and with Norris just over five seconds behind the Mercedes, he had no other option than to push.

The fastest lap of the race on the final lap was enough to earn Norris his first F1 podium finish, becoming the third-youngest driver to do so in the sport.

A further 12 points finishes, including two fourth-places, were enough for Norris to claim ninth in the standings, but importantly, his partnership with Sainz earned McLaren third in the constructors' table - the best result for the team since 2012.

In 2021, Norris took his driving to the next level, spending the first half of the year in the top three of the drivers' standings.

The Briton would ultimately slide back to sixth after a tail-off towards the end of the season, which included seeing a potential first victory slip away as rain fell late in the Russian GP.

For 2022, hopes were high given the new regulation set, but like many teams, McLaren struggled, although Norris again delivered above and beyond the performance of the car on numerous occasions.

The high point was third in the Emilia Romagna GP at Imola, with Norris the only driver to score a podium across the season beyond the 'big three' in Red Bull, Ferrari, and Mercedes.

In 2023, Norris emerged as one of the best drivers on the grid, having secured a place on the podium seven times, with six second-place finishes and one third-place finish.

He ended the season with a total of 205 points, securing the sixth position in the standings, just one point behind Fernando Alonso and Charles Leclerc and five points ahead of Carlos Sainz.

But despite his impressive performance, Norris has yet to claim his first race win of his F1 career and it remains to be seen whether he will be able to secure a victory in the upcoming seasons.
