Biography of George Russell

George Russell is a British F1 driver who currently races for the Mercedes team.

Born in King's Lynn, Norfolk, on February 15, 1998, Russell is now 26 years of age and one of the brightest young stars on the grid.

George is also one of the tallest drivers on the grid in 2022 - standing at a height of 6ft 1ins (1.85m).

George Russell in F1

Russell joined the Mercedes junior driver programme in 2017 and completed his first Formula 1 test in Budapest that year.

The Briton made his debut in an official F1 session at the Brazilian Grand Prix weekend, also in 2017, with Mercedes-powered Force India a month after securing the GP3 title at Jerez.

He completed further running for Force India when lapping in the post-season young driver test in Abu Dhabi.

In 2018, Russell took the Formula 2 title while also in position as Mercedes' reserve driver, a role he shared with Pascal Wehrlein.

Russell tested for the Silver Arrows in Hungary before signing with Williams and completing the end-of-year Abu Dhabi test for his new team.

Russell joined Williams as the reigning F2 champion in 2019 on a three-year deal.

In his first two years with Williams, Russell failed to score a point but earned himself the nickname 'Mr. Saturday' for his ability to frequently escape Q3 and place his Williams inside the top 15 on the grid.

Against Robert Kubica and Nicholas Latifi, Russell was not out-qualified by a Williams teammate in either 2019 or 2020.

2021 was the year points finally came for Russell at Williams, when he was even more impressive in qualifying.

The highlight of the year was his second in qualifying in Belgium which turned out to be good enough for a first podium when the race was waved off after two laps.

His performances across the year earned Williams eighth in the constructors' standings and a step up to Mercedes for 2022.

In 2020, when Lewis Hamilton was sidelined for the Sakhir Grand Prix after testing positive for COVID-19, Mercedes called on Russell to substitute for the championship-winning driver.

Russell was narrowly beaten by Valtteri Bottas in qualifying but he looked comfortable at the front of the field during the race.

Before the Sakhir race, Russell had failed to score a point in his F1 career but this one-off Mercedes appearance saw him score three - two for finishing ninth and one for setting the fastest lap.

Prior to a pit stop error from Mercedes where Russell's car was fitted with tyres intended for Bottas' car, the Briton had looked like a likely candidate to win the race.

For 2022, Russell was promoted to Mercedes, replacing Bottas. Despite issues with the car following a major change to the aerodynamic regulations over the winter, Russell finished in the top five in each of the first nine races, scoring third-place finishes in Australia, Spain, and Azerbaijan.

Russell eventually went on to score his debut win in Brazil, a day after triumphing in the sprint race. It proved to be Mercedes' only Grand Prix win of the year.

Just like the rest of the grid, Russell failed to win a race in 2023 as a result of Max Verstappen's dominance, but he did finish on the podium twice in Spain and Abu Dhabi and set one fastest lap in Azerbaijan.

The British driver finished the season with a total of 175 points, placing him eighth in the drivers' standings.
