Miami GP hailed as "milestone" for "incredible" F1 future

F1 CEO Stefano Domenicali has labelled the addition of Miami to the sport's calendar as a "milestone" that sets the basis for "an incredible future".

F1 recently confirmed Miami would join the schedule on a 10-year contract from 2022 after years of uncertainty and in the face of opposition from the local community.

With the venue becoming the second race to be held in the United States, Domenicali stated the grand prix would help take F1 in a positive direction.

"We are proud as Formula 1 because at this moment, above all, after a difficult 2020, the challenge in 2021 is to look ahead and to build the foundations for an incredible future for F1," said Domenicali. "This is a milestone we all wanted.

"When we shared the information with all the teams, everyone was like 'Wow! That's the right way to go. This is where we should be'. This is the direction we are going to take for a great future for Formula 1."

The original plan for the Miami GP was for the circuit to be located in the heart of the city with the skyline posing as a stunning backdrop, akin to existing races in Australia, Singapore and Baku.

With the switch of venue to the Hard Rock Stadium, home of the Miami Dolphins NFL team, Domenicali ruled out any suggestion of past proposals being a compromise.

"When you look for a different solution you need to look at all the elements that make everyone happy," he explained.

"[There was] a lot of discussion about the layout, but I'm sure the track you are going to see around the Hard Rock Stadium and Miami Gardens will be fantastic.

"We have built up something spectacular, and you will see Miami because we are in Miami.

"For F1, we wanted to be integrated, so there will be business opportunities for everyone, just to take the opportunity to go into the culture of Miami, with the people, with the schools, with the people living close to the track.

"This is something that gives added value to the cultural meaning of what Formula 1 is."
