Monger completes 140-mile Comic Relief challenge

Double amputee Billy Monger has completed his Comic Relief triathlon after hiking, kayaking and cycling 140 miles over four days.

Monger competed in the 2019 Euroformula Open series but saw his plans in 2020 curtailed by the global Covid-19 pandemic.

The 21-year-old had spoken of his challenge being a "perfect scenario" after the difficulties of lockdown and, after a gruelling week dealing with the physical and mental challenges of completing the Ironman-like adventure, Monger walked across the finish line at Brands Hatch.

"I knew this would be a test physically, but mentally it’s really hit me. Being back at Brands Hatch has been an emotional rollercoaster," said Monger on social media.

"Can’t thank everyone enough for all their support on the way, it’s really helped me! This experience has been EPIC, thank you Comic Relief!!"

Monger lost both legs in a horrifying British F4 accident in 2017 and had revealed ahead of his challenge that he had cycled for the first time since his crash just a month ago.

He completed his challenge by cycling 18 laps of the Brands Hatch circuit and walking a further three.
