Hamilton steps up new F1 season preparations despite contract silence

Lewis Hamilton has revealed he is getting his "mind and body right" for the new Formula 1 season by training in the mountains even though he has yet to agree a contract extension with Mercedes.

It was widely expected Hamilton would have put pen to paper by now to remain with the team for at least another two to three years but the silence has been surprising.

After equalling Michael Schumacher's record of winning seven drivers' world titles last year, it would be a major shock if the 36-year-old did not continue and go on to take the record outright.

On Monday, Mercedes teased a contract announcement could be imminent, but this was later revealed to be F3 driver Frederik Vesti joining the Mercedes Junior Programme.

Across the off-season, Hamilton's presence on social media has been muted compared to his usual frequent postings, but the champion has given fans a glimpse into his current training regime, particularly given his ongoing recovery after contracting Covid-19 late last year.

"Hey World, I haven’t been on here for a while," wrote Hamilton.

"I’m in the mountains training every day, getting my mind and body right. I’m hiking to the top of the mountain every morning. 3 of those hikes I cross country ski once I get to the top which is at 3400m, killer.

"I love altitude training, there is less oxygen high up so working out is much harder than at sea level, just walking up the stairs you feel it at 2000m. Normally when I finish training here and return to sea level running is such a breeze.

"I’m trying to find the right balance in cardio and strength building. On top of that, lots of work ongoing in the background. Many moving parts but just checking in to let you know I’m doing good, I’m healthy and mentally strong right now in my bubble.

"I hope you are staying as positive as you can with all that is still going on. Keep your head up. I can’t wait to see you all again at some stage soon. Sending you love and light."
