Williams performances 'better than rivals' in 2020 - Russell

Williams driver George Russell believes his team performed better across 2020 than some of its rivals despite finishing last in the constructors' standings with zero points.

Both Russell and team-mate Nicholas Latifi finished 11th on a few occasions during the season - once for the Briton compared to the Canadian's three - with the former throwing away the best chance of scoring at Imola when crashing out behind the safety car.

Whilst on paper the team struggled, progress was at least made in comparison to an uncompetitive 2019 season, leaving Russell to believe that in all aspects the team functioned to the highest ability.

"I think Williams as a race team, we got the strategy right nine times out of 10," he said. "The effort and the systems we have in place for that are really good.

"The way we work, as a race team, everybody together and the communication between everybody is at a great level.

"The Williams pit crew had some little issues this year but generally [they were] right up there with Red Bull, especially last year. These are all things you want from a race team."

Russell explained how he felt he and his team had extracted the maximum potential through the majority of the campaign, a distinctive trait from the rest of the pack.

"Most of the time, I do feel we came away fully optimising our package and that is all you can do as a race team," he added.

"Whereas, I do believe when you look up and down the grid, some guys often walk away thinking their car was better than what they achieved that race. I think we're rarely in that position which shows what great races we had."
