Hamilton praises FIA pursuit of safety after Grosjean crash

Formula 1 world champion praised the FIA for its continued pursuit of safety following Romain Grosjean's horrific accident on lap one of the Bahrain Grand Prix.

Haas driver Grosjean turned into the middle of the track on the exit of turn three in a bid to take advantage of team-mate Kevin Magnussen's slow exit to the corner, but tripped over the front of Daniil Kvyat's AlphaTauri and was pitched into the barriers.

Upon contact, the car erupted in flames and was torn in two, with Grosjean and the front half of the car wedged in the Armco barriers.

After quick work from the occupants of the medical car - the FIA's Dr Ian Roberts and Alan Van der Merwe - Grosjean was extracted from his burning chassis with only minor burns and a suspected broken rib/ribs.

During the lengthy red-flag delay, Hamilton took to social media to praise the work of the FIA.

"I'm so grateful Romain is safe, wow," wrote Hamilton. "The risk we take is no joke for those of you out there that forget that we put our life on the line for this sport and for what [we] love to do.

"This is a reminder to us all. Thankful to the FIA for the massive strides we've taken for Romain to walk away from that safely."

Grosjean has been flown to hospital for further examination.
