Ricciardo and Renault under investigation for tyre breach

Daniel Ricciardo and Renault are facing a stewards' investigation following an alleged breach of tyre usage during the second practice session for the Portuguese Grand Prix.

The first half-hour was given over to Pirelli testing a range of 2021 prototype tyres. Each team was provided with three sets, two for one driver and one for the other, with the driver with the one set under instructions to focus on a longer run.

Ricciardo was one of those drivers who was provided with two sets of rubber, but the FIA has discovered the front-left tyre of the sets was fitted in the opposite way.

This is an alleged breach of article 24.2 a) of the sporting regulations, in that "the driver of car 3 [Ricciardo] did not use the complete set of tyres of the same specification as allocated by the FIA.

A report from technical delegate Jo Bauer states that: "During the Pirelli tyre test, which took place in the first 30 minutes of the second free practice session, from 15:00 to 15:30, car number 03, driver Daniel Ricciardo, did not use the two test tyre sets as allocated. The car was fitted with the front left tyre of the sets in the opposite way."

Ricciardo and a team representative are to report to the stewards following today's drivers' briefing.
