1000th GP points gave Ferrari an "extra boost" in season of struggle

Ferrari sporting director Laurent Mekies has explained how the celebratory Tuscan Grand Prix weekend gave the Scuderia a much-needed boost amidst a season of struggle.

The Italian works team has broken several negative records in 2020, most notably in Monza, where no Ferrari qualified in the top 10 at a home race for the first time since 1984.

After missing out on points finishes at both the Belgian and Italian Grand Prix, the Tuscan Grand Prix at Ferrari-owned Mugello saw both cars return to the points paying positions with Charles Leclerc eighth and Sebastian Vettel tenth.

"I think the simple truth is that this sort of track layouts suit us better than before," Mekies said.

"Then of course, it’s such an important and great milestone for the whole company, this 1000th race.

"I’m sure it gave everybody an extra boost to try to do something more, something better."

During a season of struggle, Meckies explained, the 'boost' was a much needed one for the Scuderia, adding, "It’s hard to do that every race weekend.

We try to, but certainly, in the middle of a very difficult season as a result of positive vibes coming here in the context of the race.

"It’s a great honour for everybody in Maranello and at the race track to live that history in F1 and helping us."
