Haas team principal Guenther Steiner has offered a remarkable lifeline to Sebastian Vettel should he wish to continue his Formula 1 career in 2021.
After Ferrari opted not to renew Vettel's contract for next season, the four-time F1 champion has seen opportunities disappear at Renault, Red Bull and Racing Point over the past week.
While it appears a stretch that Vettel would want to join a team struggling towards the back of the grid, Steiner is willing to provide him with a seat.
“He’s a four-time world champion," said Steiner. "Does he want to come to a smaller team? What does he want to do in life? I don’t know.
“If he wants to do something, for sure, we’ve got a good relationship."
With his championship-winning pedigree, it has come as a surprise to some within the paddock that Vettel has struggled to find a drive for '21.
To Steiner, though, it is simply the way the situation has panned out, with so few seats available.
“I think the grid is just full at the moment," added Steiner. There is not a lot of opportunities out there anymore.
"There are times when there would be three teams fighting for him, and this year there is nobody. We had the same last year with [Nico] Hulkenberg.”
Questioned on when Haas will announce a driver line-up for next season, the team boss joked: “I’m not worried about not being able to find a driver because Sebastian Vettel is on the market!”
