Three-place grid drop for Norris for yellow-flag violation

Lando Norris has been hit with a three-place grid penalty for the Formula 1 Styrian Grand Prix for ignoring yellow flags during first practice.

Half an hour into the session at the Red Bull Ring, yellow flags were displayed to allow for the recovery of Nicholas Latifi's stricken Williams.

Driving along the back straight to turn four, McLaren driver Norris was warned by race engineer Will Joseph there were "currently yellow flags at turn five".

Approaching the zone, he was reminded of "yellow flags here", but the 20-year-old continued to overtake AlphaTauri's Pierre Gasly, albeit at a vastly reduced pace.

After reviewing the footage, the race stewards took the decision to hand Norris a three-place grid penalty and add two penalty points to his licence - the first of his F1 career.

"The Stewards heard from the driver of Car 4 (Lando Norris) and the team representative and have reviewed video evidence," read an FIA document.

"On-board footage clearly shows that the driver of Car 4 passed Car 10 [Gasly] while yellow light panels were clearly visible and yellow flags were shown."
