Lewis Hamilton has declared himself 'proud' of Mercedes after the Formula 1 team unveiled an all-black livery for the coming season.

On Monday, Mercedes lifted the covers off its revised 2020 livery, labelling the new look as "a clear statement that we stand against racism and all forms of discrimination".

"I am so proud of this team for being open-eyed to the serious issue of racism and discrimination," wrote Hamilton on social media. "They've taken steps to ensure they are being open-minded, to be willing to learn from lessons past and present, and [are] working together wholeheartedly for a better, more equal and inclusive future.

"The Silver Arrows has been a prominent leader for decades, and this marks a new era for them also, where we push for inclusion and diversity.

"We have much to do, but I'm confident that together we can help change this sport and spark the others in the industry to follow."

Hamilton has been outspoken throughout the lockdown about the need for change in motorsport, and also attended a Black Lives Matter protest in London, adding his voice to those calling for a more inclusive society.

In the lead up to the new season, Formula 1 has answered Hamilton's calls by launching the #WeRaceAsOne initiative, while the driver has himself launched a commission to tackle the issues of racism and diversity head on.

Mercedes will first run the revised livery on Friday during free practice one of the season opening Austrian Grand Prix weekend.
