Mercedes boss Wolff unable to ignore "asset" Vettel

Mercedes motorsport boss Toto Wolff has refused to rule his Formula 1 team out of the running to sign Sebastian Vettel.

Vettel is to leave Ferrari at the end of the year, ending what will be a six-year association with the Scuderia.

The 32-year-old has stated he "will take the time I need to reflect on what really matters when it comes to my future".

There appear to be numerous options open to the four-time champion, with Mercedes a possibility as both Lewis Hamilton and Valtteri Bottas are out of contract at the end of the season.

Speaking to Germany's dpa press agency, Wolff has left the door open to the prospect of signing Vettel.

"Sebastian is a great driver, with a great personality and an asset to any Formula 1 team," said Wolff.

"With a view to the future, we are primarily committed to loyalty to our current Mercedes drivers, but of course we cannot ignore this development."
