Monaco Grand Prix would have been "impossible" to be restaged

Monaco Grand Prix organisers have claimed it would have been "impossible" to hold the race later this year following the recent cancellation of Formula 1's blue-riband event.

For the first time since 1954, there will be no Monaco GP this season, with the Automobile Club de Monaco [ACM] opting to cancel the race that was due to be staged from May 21-24 rather than postponing and hoping for a slot later this year.

ACM president Michel Boeri has confirmed it was "with great sadness" the race had to be cancelled, albeit conceding there was no choice as "it became impossible to fight against an epidemic that was gaining ground".

As to why the race could not be rescheduled, speaking in the FIA's AUTO magazine, Boeri said: “It is not realistic.

“To ask the 1500 volunteers to switch their availability from May to August, or companies, some of which are far from here, to come back and build the circuit later? It was impossible. We were stuck.

“In addition, we are not the only ones in the Principality of Monaco: there are so many events between August and October, we cannot overlap, especially when we know that it takes us 45 days to build the circuit and 25 to deconstruct.”
