Giovinazzi thinks he can replace Vettel in 2021

Antonio Giovinazzi admits he still harbours a “dream” of performing for Ferrari in Formula 1, and believes he has a chance of replacing Sebastian Vettel with the Scuderia at the end of 2020 if he performs well enough for Alfa Romeo.

The 26-year-old was previously a test driver for Ferrari and, as an Italian, is a stakeholder in how the team performs.

Even though he is yet to achieve what he describes as his dream, he isn’t giving up hope just yet, with Vettel’s future still undecided.

“I would be lying if I said I do not dream of Ferrari," he told La Gazzetta dello Sport.

“I already have a great relationship with Charles [Leclerc]. We talk a lot and go to the same restaurants in Monaco.”

After taking a little while to find his feet with Alfa Romeo in 2019, he eventually impressed enough to be retained for 2020 when he will once again partner Kimi Raikkonen.

He believes that outperforming the former Ferrari veteran in Raikkonen could help his case for a seat with the team.

“Beating Kimi is one of my goals for this season, but not the only one,” Giovinazzi added.

“It will be a crucial season, but it’s always like that when there is a confirmation or a promotion."
