Races in Monza, UK, and Mexico 'unique and special' - Perez

Sergio Perez is delighted that the Mexican Grand Prix will remain on the calendar for another few seasons after a new deal was struck, and has mentioned that particular race along with the Italian and British events as being “unique and special”.

The GP in Mexico was one of a number of high-profile races which had their contracts expire after 2019, but after long deliberations it was saved, much to the relief of the Mexican fans, and Perez himself.

“Well, those were great news for our country, for Formula One. I think Formula One is looking to have more races like Mexico. We don’t have that many where we go there and the fans are cheering – not just for me but for everyone up there,” the Racing Point driver said ahead of the race at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez

“It’s just something that’s extremely good to have and you see places like Monza, England, those unique places that are, for us, very special so for me especially, it was extremely good to hear that the Mexican Grand Prix is for another three years, especially as it has grown so much in the past. Now can you say Formula One is very big in Mexico so I hope it carries on not just three years, more than that.”

Lewis Hamilton, Sebastian Vettel, Antonio Giovinazzi and Alexander Albon agreed with Perez, with the German saying the return of the Mexican GP to the sport in 2015 was welcomed.

Yeah, I think it’s great to continue going to a Grand Prix where there’s passion for racing.” Vettel said.

“I think that since we’ve come back – I don’t know how it was when Ferrari last won in 1990, how it was before, but certainly since we’ve been coming back since 2015 it’s been very positive, lots of people, full grandstands.

“ It’s not the case everywhere we go so we should be very happy about the fact that we are allowed to come back.”
